Infant formula recalled due to potential contamination
Nestlé has issued a precautionary recall for several SMA infant and follow-on formula products due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin – a heat-stable toxin produced by Bacillus cereus.
Pharmacy teams have been advised to review their stock for the following products and batch codes:
- SMA Advanced First Infant Milk (800 g) – specific batch codes, best before May 2027
- SMA Advanced Follow‑On Milk (800 g)
- SMA Anti‑Reflux (800 g)
- SMA Alfamino (400 g)
- SMA First Infant Milk (400 g, 800 g, 1.2 kg)
- SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk (800 g)
- SMA Comfort (800 g)
- SMA First Infant Milk (ready‑to‑feed 70 ml & 200 ml)
- SMA Lactose‑Free (400 g)
The possible presence of cereulide toxin makes these products unsafe to consume. Symptoms caused by this toxin include nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
Because cereulide is highly heat stable, it is unlikely to be destroyed or deactivated by cooking, using boiling water, or when making the infant milk.
Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.
People who have bought any of the above products should share a photo of the product and batch code with Nestlé via their website or call the careline on 0800 0 81 81 80 for a refund. They should not feed the product to babies.
