John Bacon has been appointed as the new chair of the Company Chemists’ Association (CCA), the trade association has announced.

Mr Bacon replaces Rowlands Pharmacy superintendent director Margaret MacRury, who stepped down after chairing the CCA on an interim basis while the advocacy group Pharmacy Voice was active.

He was previously a director general at the Department of Health (DH). He will remain the chair of the Department of Health and Social Care’s (DHSC) wholly-owned property company Community Health Partnerships.

Healthcare experience

With more than 30 years of experience within the NHS, Mr Bacon has held various senior positions at both regional and national levels, including head of the NHS in London.

As a director general in the former DH, his responsibilities included day-to-day management of the NHS, with the oversight of finance, capital investment, staff and relations with the private sector.

‘New strategy in place’

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Bacon said: ‘I’m delighted to be joining the CCA at this new stage of its development and thank Margaret for her work in leading the CCA board through a period of transition.

‘With a new strategy and team in place, I look forward to working with the CCA team to help it deliver its vision that everyone, everywhere, should benefit from world class healthcare and wellbeing services provided by their community pharmacy.’
