The medicines watchdog has recalled a batch of laxative medication made by the manufacturer Chanelle Medical after a discovery of mould on some tablets.

Tablets that were stuck together and in some cases contaminated with a Penicillium species of mould have been detected in a small number of packs of Bisacodyl 5mg gastro-resistant tablets, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) said yesterday (24 July).

It is ‘unlikely’ that any affected tablets will have reached patients as the sticking is ‘noticeable’ when the pack is opened, the medicines watchdog stressed.

However, pharmacists should stop dispensing the affected batch, quarantine all remaining stock and return it to the supplier within 48 hours, the MHRA said.

While only one batch is being recalled, several batches were manufactured at the same time, it added.

If pharmacists find any other tablets that are stuck together or show microbial growth, they should not dispense them, return them to the supplier and immediately notify Chanelle Medical.

Storage below 25°C in the tightly closed original container is ‘essential to ensure maintenance of the quality of the product’, the MHRA said.
