Pharmacies have been advised that the brand Nystan 100,000units/ml oral suspension (ready mixed) (Vygoris Ltd)30 ml has been discontinued.
The branded oral suspension, used for oral thrush, is no longer available for pharmacies to order and instead a generic Nystatin 100,000units/ml oral suspension should be ordered from wholesalers.
The discontinuation raises potential price issues, as the current selling prices for the generic Nystatin 100,000units/ml oral suspension are above the indicative reimbursement price in the May 2025 Drug Tariff (£1.80 based on NHS list price of Nystan).
Community Pharmacy England (CPE) said it has highlighted this pricing issue to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and will update pharmacy teams when it receives a response.
Given the discontinuation of the branded version, pharmacies have been advised to contact prescribers and request a replacement prescription for the generic version where necessary – which Zydus Pharmaceuticals UK Ltd has introduced.
The Specialist Pharmacy Service has also issued guidance advising pharmacy teams to take care that the correct product is selected on ordering systems, ensuring the generic Nystatin 100,000units/ml oral suspension is selected instead of the discontinued brand Nystan.
