OXY Clearlight has four light emitting diodes (LEDs), which emit a safe form of pure blue light at a specific wavelength. When the device is turned on and held over the affected area, the blue light triggers a biological reaction which kills the P. acnes bacteria by activating compounds called porphyrins. These are a normal part of P. acnes metabolism and the photodynamic reaction produces singlet oxygen atoms, which damage the bacteria cell wall, causing the bacteria to die. With fewer bacteria present, inflammation is reduced, allowing skin to heal.
